Who can resist the smiling charm of the pansy’s blossom? Often referred to as flowers with faces, these little charmers are not at all as fragile as they look. Favoring cool weather, these little charmers are available in a growing variety of colors and markings, from nearly black to a new array of solid colors, ruffles, doubles and blotches. They bloom best in spring and fall when daytime temperatures are 60 degrees F and night temperatures are around 40 degrees F.

Pansies are a welcome addition to the landscape, pairing nicely with spring flowering bulbs. They provide two levels of color -- one at the ground, and one above with the daffodil and tulip blossoms.  Pansies are also effective planted in mass or in drifts with other flowers in beds and borders.

Deadheading the old flowers once in a while will help the plant conserve energy by preventing seed production. An application of 5-10-5 fertilizer every three or four weeks will promote bigger, brighter flowers on sturdy plants. Flowering fades during the hot, summer weather, but can perk up again if you have the patience to wait out the return of cooler temperatures. Pansies are more often treated as an early annual, being displaced by summer’s heat loving annuals.

The smaller growing violas are also known as Johnny-Jump-Ups and require the same care as pansies. Violas are more likely to return in following years from seed.

One of this year’s offerings is a red white and blue mix called 'Let Freedom Ring.'
